The climate and ecological crises demand a generation of young people who understand complex systems, think critically about consumption and justice, and feel empowered to act. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is not an extra subject to squeeze into an already crowded curriculum — it is a transformative approach to learning that cuts across every discipline and every level of education. This course gives educators the conceptual tools and practical strategies to make it a living reality in their work.
We begin with the foundations: the UN Sustainable Development Goals, planetary boundaries thinking, and the latest frameworks for ESD from UNESCO and the European Green Deal. Participants will explore how sustainability intersects with social justice, global citizenship, and critical media literacy, gaining a holistic view of the challenge and their role within it.
Place-based and outdoor learning take centre stage as we move into practice. Participants experience and then design learning activities that connect students to their local environment, fostering ecological literacy, sensory engagement, and a sense of care for the living world. We also examine project-based approaches that allow students to investigate local sustainability challenges and co-create solutions with their communities.
The final strand of the course focuses on institutional change: how to advocate for sustainability within your school or organisation, build partnerships with local businesses and NGOs, and sustain momentum beyond a single project or initiative. Participants leave with a personal ESD action plan and a portfolio of activities ready to implement from day one.
